Society Mentor - Mr. Andrew Raftery

With changes in the curriculum, students do not get an adequate exposure to surgery within the undergraduate course. It is therefore difficult for them to know how to proceed as a postgraduate with training in surgery. The Sheffield students are to be congratulated on setting up the Sheffield Students Surgical Society to provide information for students and thus enable them to gain a broader view of what is required for surgical training. The provision of lectures, counselling sessions, courses in surgical anatomy will be invaluable in setting them on the road to a successful surgical career.
WinS (Women in Surgery)
WinS stands for Women in Surgery. It's an organisation that is part of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, which aims to encourage women to go into surgical training and support them when they do so. There are a number of regional contacts for WinS members to go to for advice about a career in surgery. The representative for Sheffield is Miss Jenny Walker, who is a Paediatric Surgeon at Sheffield Children's Hospital.
WinS is FREE to join and you can sign up as a medical student.
